#3... The Grey Sentinel ~ 16 x 20 Canvas Wrap ~
He no longer marched in parades, yet each morning he lifted the old hat from its hook as if greeting an old friend.
He wore it not for show, but for the memory of a younger man who once believed the country was still becoming.
The flag behind him had faded with the years, and he preferred it that way.
New cloth told no stories - worn cloth remembered everything.
With the nation's 250th celebration drawing near, the town had begun to stir again with bunting and bells. He would go, slowly now, just to stand among them once more.
For he had learned that freedom was seldom loud ~ it lived in ordinary days... in work, in neighbors, in children sleeping without fear.
And as evening settled, he was grateful that the country he once hoped for had given him a life to grow old inside.
