#4... Olde Sam of Colorado Springs ~
Just beyond the hot springs, tucked away in a weathered homestead at the edge of town, lives Old Sam.
Most days he keeps to himself. The seasons come and go, and Sam is content with the quiet company of his rocking chair, his memories, and the little carved horse he has carried for years.
But every Fourth of July is different.
Before dawn, he dusts off his old hat, straightens his coat, and makes the trip into Colorado Springs for the town barbecue and parade. And before he joins the festivities, he always makes one stop at the Mercantile.
There, Old Sam buys a handful of saltwater taffy.
It’s a tradition he’s kept for years.
Before heading to the parade, he always tucks a few pieces into his coat pocket. He knows he’ll see young Brian before the day is through, and no Fourth of July would seem quite right without having a treat ready for the boy.
Old Sam loves the parade, the music, and the town barbecue as much as anyone. But seeing his young friend among the crowd has become one of his favorite parts of the celebration.
And so, with a pocket full of taffy and a smile in his heart, Old Sam joins the townsfolk for another Fourth of July in Colorado Springs.
